For many aspiring editors, writers, and creatives in India, the publishing industry can feel like a black box. Who decides what gets published? What exactly does an editor do? How do books get marketed or even designed? Unlike fields with clearer career pathways, publishing in India has remained largely a mystery, with few to no formal publishing programmes. This lack of visibility can make it difficult for talented individuals to find their footing.

That’s where The Bound Publishing Course (TBPC) steps in. India’s first comprehensive publishing certification programme, TBPC demystifies the world of book, magazine, and digital publishing. One of the reasons publishing in India has remained so elusive is the sheer variety of roles it encompasses: manuscript evaluation, structural editing, copyediting, marketing, design, literary agenting, rights management, and increasingly, digital strategy. And it’s all delivered online, making it accessible to participants from across India and beyond.

The course is built around four core phases. First, the Foundation stage gives students a bird’s-eye view of the publishing process, led by professionals who’ve worked across the industry. This is where participants begin to understand how the different pieces of the puzzle fit together.

In the Specialisation phase, students choose a track: Book Editing, Marketing and PR, or Digital Publishing. This allows them to build depth in a particular area while still being aware of the broader ecosystem.

The most distinctive part of TBPC is its Recruitment Drive. This course offers direct access to top content and publishing companies. In 2024, recruitment partners included Penguin Random House India, Notion Press, Crossword Bookstores, Rupa Publications, Newslaundry, and many more. Out of 53 participants in the cohort, 37 were job seekers. Every one of them received an opportunity to interview with major companies, and 11 secured roles!

The course ends with a Capstone Project, where students simulate running a publishing house. Each participant plays a real-world role—editor, marketer, designer—and the group pitches its business model and publishing list to a panel of experts. It’s a rare chance to apply theoretical learning in a collaborative, practical setting.

TBPC also addresses another challenge: the lack of structured career development. With over 100 hours of teaching, graded assignments, resume-building workshops, and career panels, it gives participants tools to build a professional identity. The certification signals credibility in an industry where formal qualifications are rare.
